The most prolific teacher of machines in human history lives at the end of a dirt road in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, and does not own a phone.
Doña Imelda Choc Pop has woven on a backstrap loom since she was seven. The loom is a set of sticks and a strap around the weaver's back; the tension of the entire textile is controlled by the weaver's body, and the pattern—in her case, ceremonial huipiles whose designs her grandmother carried from her grandmother—is held nowhere but in the hands. No written pattern exists. When the fitting team from the Cobán hub visited her cooperative two years ago, she agreed to wear the gloves for one reason, which she has repeated in every interview since: "So the pattern doesn't die with me."
Then she wove. Four thousand one hundred hours of capture in twenty-two months. Six to eight hours a day, six days a week, every motion recorded: the tensioning, the shed changes, the pick-up work where a single thread is lifted from among hundreds by feel alone.
Here is what nobody expected—not the roboticists, not the licensing agents, not Doña Imelda. Backstrap weaving turns out to sit near the dead center of the dexterity manifold. The continuous bimanual tension control, the sub-millimeter thread selection, the constant force feedback through the whole body—it is, in the words of one licensing engineer, "the most information-dense manipulation data in the corpus. It's every hard problem at once, solved fluently, for hours, without a single wasted motion."
Models trained with her data grip more gently, adjust faster, and recover from slips more gracefully—even at tasks that have nothing to do with weaving. Her tension control shows up in surgical assistants. Her thread selection shows up in electronics assembly. Her slip recovery shows up in the elder-care units in Osaka. As of this month, her motion data is licensed into models running on roughly one in six deployed robots worldwide. Something over 1.6 million machines, twenty-two thousand of them active at any given moment.
Her granddaughter Ixchel, nineteen, who manages the cooperative's wallet from a phone in Cobán, showed her the dashboard in February. Doña Imelda studied the number of machines for a long moment and asked whether the robots were weaving huipiles. Told that they were mostly picking things up in warehouses, she was quiet, and then said: "Even so. They hold things the way I taught them. That is not nothing."
The royalties are not nothing either. The cooperative's nineteen weavers—all now on the Registry—collectively earned more last quarter than the entire cooperative earned in the previous decade of textile sales. They have bought the building they rented for thirty years, funded a weaving school with forty students, and raised their own textile prices, because, as Ixchel puts it, "the originals are made by the hands a million machines learned from. That's not a fair price. It's a museum piece you can wear."
The school has a waitlist. Girls come from three departments away. Every student is fitted for gloves on her first day—the pattern goes into her hands and into the corpus in the same motion, preserved twice over.
Above the school's door, the students painted two symbols side by side: a Maya glyph for "thread," and ☜.
Doña Imelda still weaves every day. Somewhere in the world, several hundred thousand machines are, at this exact moment, holding something carefully because she showed them how.
She has never seen one. She would like the pattern to be famous, not her. It is far too late for that, on both counts. ☜
